Bronchitis is also known as chest cold. It can be treated with Amoxicillin or with inhalers. For respiratory emergencies, patients can be treated with rescue puffers, Ventolin, or Salbutamol. For those who want to know how to treat bronchitis at home, here are some ways:

•    Clear the home from any smoke
•    Stop smoking
•    Do not allow smokers into your home
•    Stay away from nose, throat, or lung irritants like dust particles and pets
•    Get plenty of rest
•    Take your medications on time and in the right dosage as prescribed by your doctor
•    Eat healthy
•    Often wash your hands
•    Designate cups, glasses, and utensils for every member of the family
•    Drink plenty of fluids

Some doctors will prescribe bronchodilators, which are inhaled medications. These can help clear the air passageway so that the patient can breathe easily. More severe cases of bronchitis are usually treated with inhaled or oral steroids to lessen the swelling of the bronchi. Others also prescribe oxygen tanks.

For those with normal lungs and no chronic bronchitis, there really isn’t any need for antibiotics to treat bronchitis even if the cause of the disease is bacterial. The healthy body’s response to this common respiratory problem is coughing. Coughing helps expel the excess mucus in the lungs, so it is very much encouraged. Disruptive or painful coughs however, should be treated with cough suppressants, which should be doctor-prescribed.

In most cases, you don’t need to know specifics on how to treat bronchitis and can just let the condition fade away naturally because it will in a few weeks. You can take acetaminophen for any discomfort you feel and take lots of water.
