There are certain factors to consider in bronchitis treatment. For chronic bronchitis, doctors check the extent of the infection or inflammation, the age, and the overall health of the patient. Doctors will also check for the patient’s tolerance for specific types of therapies or treatments and see how he recuperates or responds.
Bronchitis treatment includes oral and inhaled medications that can open the air passageways to minimize the inflammation in the bronchial tubes. Patients who have difficulty breathing are given oxygen tanks to breath from. Severe cases of bronchitis often undergo surgery for lung transplant or lung reduction to control the damages.
Simple measures in conventional treatment can be used to address acute bronchitis. These include:
• Increasing fluid intake by drinking water every 1 to 2 hours unless otherwise advised by the doctor
• Plenty of rest
• Stop smoking or keep away from those who smoke
• Get pain relief from aspirin or acetaminophen. Check with your doctor first, especially if you are taking other medications.
• Check with your doctor on ways to clear the mucus out and follow his instructions
• Take note of how often you cough and observe the color and amount of phlegm you cough out. Relate the information to your doctor promptly.
Those with dry coughs with little or no mucus at all are prescribed with cough medicines that can suppress the coughing. Expectorants may be given so that the mucus will loosen up for easier release through coughing.
You can also check with your doctor about annual flu shots and vaccinations against pneumonia that can help protect you from many common diseases an may be part of your bronchitis treatment plan.
